Corki © TM brings a bit of fun to Allies4Earth and The Green Footprint websites. Why is a Cow a Green Footprint mascot? The answer is Silent but Deadly! Methane! Ooops pardon me!
The biggest villains of Climate Change / Global Warming are normally seen as Planes that leave their pollution in trails in the sky, Cars and Trucks that belch out Carbon by the Ton, Industries chimney stacks, lights left on unnecessarily and computers left on standby. Corki and his other friends just stand around eating green stuff, releasing Methane (Farts) by the ton, having a great giggle at humans wondering why so many of them do not use our by products instead of Non Fossil Fuel. Don't you know us cows and other grazing animals plus our love of Grass equals "METHANE", the same gas as that released by landfills, coal mines and leaking gas pipes. Methane’s claim to "Global Warming Fame" is that it is 23 times more effective at trapping heat in the atmosphere than CO2 and you could use natural Anerobic Digestion to create green fuel for your vehicles and generating electricity. Oh well, must get on as that Green Footprint Guy is now coming with a big Cork and Mallet that he says could solve the problem! |

Natures Answer - Anaerobic Digestion - AKA Poo4Power Anaerobic digestion is the natural breakdown of organic materials into methane and carbon dioxide gas and fertiliser which takes place naturally, or in can be done faster in an anaerobic digester. A typical anaerobic digester is a sealed vessel, or series of vessels, in which Natural Bacteria act without oxygen on organic material that is fully mixed and is warmed to blood temperature. Biogas is the name given to the mixture of gases formed during the anaerobic digestion of organic wastes and consists of 70 %methane and 30% carbon dioxide and this Gas can be used in stationary engines to generate electricity, but it is not at this stage suitable as a vehicle fuel Biomethane after removing the carbon dioxide & other trace gases the remaining methane is called Biomethane which is virtually identical to natural gas, the main difference being that it is produced in days, rather than taking millions of years, billions of years ago so the uses for biomethane are therefore as varied as are those for natural gas, for heating, cooling, as a source of chemicals, fertiliser or hydrogen. Biomethane vehicle fuel is without doubt, the world’s cleanest and most environmentally friendly fuel. Even the compost produced from a complete treatment system such as the Maltin® System ensures that all the material is broken down into its most basic chemical components with no contaminants, no smell when dry or wet & no pathogens or weed seeds. So Nature with the help of Cows or many of their close relatives of the The biological sub family Bovinae such as the Bison, African Buffalo, Water Buffalo, Yaks, Giraffes and Antelopes has already given humans the main ingrediant for an answer to reducing climate change Gas Emmisions.
Its a Natural Co-op Venture & Poo4Power and Maltin have set up a Co-op venture where Farmers can become involved in setting up Central Anaerobic Digestion Plants in the UK or indeed wherever they farm.

Facts –
Methane is about twenty times more potent as a greenhouse gas as carbon dioxide this has significant negative environmental effects.
Anaerobic digestion is a series of processes in which microorganisms break down biodegradable material in the absence of oxygen, used for industrial or domestic purposes to manage waste and/or to release energy. It is widely used as part of the process to treat wastewater. As part of an integrated waste management system, anaerobic digestion reduces the emission of landfill gas into the atmosphere.
Anaerobic digestion is widely used as a renewable energy source because the process produces a methane and carbon dioxide rich biogas suitable for energy production, helping to replace fossil fuels. The nutrient-rich digestate which is also produced can be used as fertilizer. The digestion process begins with bacterial hydrolysis of the input materials and makes them available for other bacteria. The bacterial stages are Acidogenic bacteria, Acetogenic bacteria and then methanogens convert these products to methane and carbon dioxide.
Anaerobic digestion facilities have been recognized by the United Nations Development Programme as one of the most useful decentralized sources of energy supply, as they are less capital intensive than large power plants. |

Early in 2009 the Internet story of a Hilarides a California dairy who had converted 18 wheeler trucks to run on biomethane produced from cow manure broke.
The methane fuel came from manure from 10,000 cows and generated about 226,000 cubic feet of biomethane daily which could reduce the farm’s diesel fuel requirements by over 600 gallons a day.
The farm owner Mr Hilarides announced the conversion at the World Ag Exposision in Tulare, California and follows the recent anouncement that City officials in Oslo, Norway, recently announced they would convert 80 municipal buses to run on methane generated from human waste.
The bio-gas Cow Poo process involves flushing manure and other waste from the cows’ stalls into a covered lagoon where bacteria breaks it down. Methane is then pumped from the lagoon to a refinery where carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and other impurities are removed. The purified methane is then pressurized so it can be pumped into the trucks which have Cummins Diesel engines converted to spark-ignited methane-burning.
The project was financed with a $600,000 grant from the California Air Resources Board Alternative Fuel Incentive Program who said in a statement that "It’s energy projects like this that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and get us off our dependency on foreign oil," and added "It also addresses sources of long-term air and water pollution problems."
This clearly shows that by using cow manure to produce bio-methane reduces greenhouse gas emissions, now accepted by the majority of the worlds population as the main reason for Global Warming, in two ways. The first effect is that Burning biomethane produces less pollution than conventional fuel, the second is that its very production reduces dramatically the methane released into the atmosphere by the manure itself.
Biomethane advocates such as Sustainable Conservation have stated that manure from the US nation’s dairy cows could generate enough fuel to run about 1 million vehicles which in real terms would be the same as taking 16 million gasoline or diesel vehicles off the US Roads. Others have stated that California’s dairy cows alone could produce 8 billion cubic feet of methane a year, the equivalent of more than 150 million gallons of gasoline."
The technology is here and public-private partnerships can make this work. Biomethane is the only vehicle fuel that is carbon negative.

In the North East USA Central Vermont Public Service was one of five organizations recognized for its leadership in advancing the development of "green power" and won the Utility Green Power Program of the Year award for its Cow Power program, the first manure-to-energy system during the Renewable Energy Markets 2009 Conference in Atlanta.
Sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Energy and the Center for Resource Solutions. The awards recognize the actions of individuals, companies and organizations that significantly advance the development of renewable electricity sources through green power markets.
Cow Power has 4,000 customers and six participating farms and the success of the program has been proven by the demand for its electricity, which has exceeded supply since it was started in 2005.
In 2008, demand had grown to 13,100 megawatt hours & participating farms produced 7,700 megawatt hours.
Customers who enroll in the program pay 4 cents over and above the market price for electricity and that 4 cents goes directly to the participating farms, into buying renewable energy certificates to make up for the shortfall or into the renewable energy fund that helps pay for Cow Power projects
Hundreds of farms around the country are involved in some sort of methane generation, said a spokesman for CVPS, which is the only utility that is using the methane to produce electricity for sale on the grid adding that industrial-scale feedlots could also benefit from on-site digesters, which they haven t taken advantage of either. This model could have a huge environmental impact if there was the will for it and CVPS has received inquiries from around the world on how its program works and how it can be adapted to different situations, which keeps CVPS positive about its efforts in the face of what appears to be ambivalence on the part of large utilities and feedlots. The farms that are online now have about 1,000 cows each and Several companies are in the process of developing "off-the-shelf" digesters that can be used at almost any farm.
CVPS was nominated for the award by Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie who said "The thinking that created Cow Power, turning a waste stream into an asset, is just the kind of thinking we need as we face growing energy and environmental challenges,"

With Methane being the common denominator of this page the City of Oslo in Norway has 80 municipal buses running on Biomethane, not from cows but captured from human waste, to cut CO2 emissions help Norway’s ambitious plan to be carbon-neutral by 2050. Beginning in September 2009, the two sewage treatment plants in Norway’s capital will collect methane, a byproduct of the microbial process that breaks down sewage, and pump it into city buses.
City officials say the switch will cut fuel costs and reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by both the treatment plants and the buses. "Oslo aims to be one of the most environmentally sustainable capitals in the world," the project manager Ole Jakob Johansen told the Guardian Newspaper.
Until now, much of the methane produced by Oslo’s sewage treatment plants was flared off into the atmosphere, Like many other cities across the world, releasing about 17,000 tons of CO2 but Oslo concerned by a big jump in transportation-related air pollution, which has climbed 10 percent since 2000 and contributes to more than half of the country’s annual CO2 emissions, officials decided to capture the stuff and burn it in buses.
Oslo is however keeping abrest of the use of Methane for producing Electricity.
It’s a net-zero carbon equation because the carbon originally came from the atmosphere, city officials say. Even when you account for the electricity used to make the gas, the switch will save 44 tons of CO2 per bus per year.
Setting up the initial infrastructure required for biomethane production is not cheap, but the gas that gets produced is cheap in comparison to normal Diesel and financially for the worlds climate.
Only minor modification to the buses is required and with billions of people on the earth already contributing to the base product needed it should be interesting to see how many forms of public transport across the world or which Bus company follow suit as soon as possible for our planet. |

Just a Thought.
Dear Mr Obahma. Seeing that during the USA "Cash 4 Clunkers" Scheme many tens of thousands of Diesel Engined Vehicles had their Engines Blown up and destroyed and that Norway has stated that only minor modification to Big Multi People Carriers Buses is required for them to run on Methane would it not have been more sensible for the Environment and the planet to have got the Professional Auto Recycling Industry to have been trusted to keeep these for their future conversion.

PS. CC to Mr Gordon Brown and all leaders of countries that ran similar schemes.
PPS. Mr Obahma. Having visited your country on more than once I could not help noticing the thousands of Yellow Busses in your country. Might it not be a great idea to look to converting these to operate on methane as a better use for your subsidies rather than supporting vehicle manufacturers’ sales. |
